The 10th Annual Mountain States Dragon Boat Festival: A Success!

Dragon Boat 2015The Mountain States Dragon Boat Festival moved to a new home this year, crowned a repeat champion and grossed more than $106,000 for Woodridge Hospital's Willow Unit, the behavioral health unit for children ages 6-17. The new location, Warriors' Path State Park, drew rave reviews for the paddling setup and ease of viewing for the spectators.

There were 28 teams entered, racing over a distance of 200 meters. The top three overall finishers, who competed for the Mountain States Dragon Boat Championship were: 1. Murray's Marauders, from Murray Guard, also last year's champions (time of 54.32 seconds); 2. Axis II Boat 1, from Woodridge Hospital (56.09 seconds); and 3. Bell Flew Bayou Once, from Bell Helicopter (56.11 seconds).

The festival also featured a Kids Paddle for the first time. The top fundraising team was Rowing in the Dough, from Mountain States Health Alliance's Central Business Office.

"This is such a good cause and it will make a difference for our young patients at Woodridge," said Pat Holtsclaw, Mountain States Foundation president. "The proceeds will be used for upgrades and enhancements to the Willow Unit to make it a more comfortable environment for them. We want to thank all our sponsors and everyone who paddled, donated money and volunteered their time. We especially want to thank Warriors' Path State Park for letting us have our festival in their beautiful park."

The History of Dragon Boat Races

The Dragon Boat Festival is one of China's most spectacular traditions. According to legend, Qu Yuan, a well-respected counselor of the Emperor, decided to drown himself in the Miluo River rather than live under the laws of a corrupt government. Onlookers frantically pounded the water with their oars and paddles to keep evil spirits away from his body. Today, this legend is re-enacted by Dragon Boat Festivals all around the world.
